Instagram is experimenting with a new feature that facilitates the creation of AI-generated profile photographs, providing a stylized, artistic rendition of users’ photos straight in the profile editing settings. This feature would enable users to swiftly use Meta’s AI image production tools, enhancing their profile photographs with a modern, creative flair. Although this would represent a fresh enhancement for Instagram, it is not wholly unprecedented in social media, since Facebook has been experimenting with analogous capabilities, and both TikTok and Snapchat have features such as “Dreams” and AI avatar generators.
This initiative matches Instagram with other networks providing AI-generated profile images, although it also elicits worries. Considering that social media frequently grapples with challenges pertaining to anonymity, fraud, and misinformation, the introduction of tools that further obscure true identities may not yield a beneficial outcome.

Nonetheless, Instagram, akin to other platforms, seeks to remain relevant by adapting to breakthroughs in AI to maintain its competitive edge. Nonetheless, it is contentious whether AI-generated photos fulfill the fundamental objective of social applications—facilitating authentic social connections among individuals. Historically, social platforms have focused on the exchange of authentic experiences, and although AI-generated art has its relevance, the majority of users prefer genuine connections over artificial imagery.
This initiative appears to contradict social platforms’ enduring struggle against bots and fraudulent profiles. For years, users have expressed exasperation with bots that distort encounters through fabricated representations of non-existent individuals. Promoting AI-generated profile photos may unintentionally exacerbate this issue. This year, Meta demolished a network of more than 900 profiles utilizing counterfeit AI-generated headshots to impersonate actual individuals, highlighting the associated risks of this technology.
